A multisensory, interactive installation about memory and the fragility of the natural world.
The brief
Repast is an installation about memory and the fragility of the natural world, led by creative director Nicole Brady and developed partly through a residency at the UKARIA Cultural Centre, with support from Light ADL.
The idea
A cinematic film shot in South Australia sits alongside a mirrored digital environment. The digital world continuously morphs the landscape’s data points, highlighting how fragile and subjective our recollection of the past is.
The craft
- 3D scanning and drone photogrammetry turned the South Australian landscape into a living point cloud.
- Motion sensors let the audience interact directly with the artwork, altering and reassembling the landscape as they move.
- Scent and sound: a bespoke scent of the Australian landscape fills the space, while field recordings captured in surround sound are blended with a multichannel electronic and acoustic score recorded by Australian classical musicians.
The outcome
Repast was shown at Illuminate Adelaide and at Spier Light Art in Cape Town, and more than 20,000 people have interacted with it.
